Last July we took the opportunity to visit Castle Howard in Yorkshire, the we being myself, my mother in law, and my three children Emma 9, Calum 6 and Ewan then 2, the children were really excited about seeing a “ real castle” and so the journey was as is usual filled with are we there yet?

My mother in law had visited Castle Howard previously so we felt we had our own tour guide on board. On arrival the queues were quite long so we decided to go an get a drink before continuing, the café prices were extortionate and although the place itself was very clean and well presented it was cold and the staff were less than amiable, not wanting to let this put us off we carried on and went to queue for entry into the grounds, had we not had complimentary tickets I’m not sure whether we would normally consider this as a day out as entry was also quite expensive for the children, once inside it is hard not to

The Hayloft Cafe

understand why there are so many visitors here every year as the grounds are spectacular, with well manicured lawns and beautiful flower beds.

There was also provision made for those who are less able or prefer the more relaxed route to the house in the shape of a land train, but as it was such a nice day and the children had been cooped up in the car for such a long time we decided a walk would do us all good. Once at the house we had to decide whether or not to go in, as Emma is interested in history we decided even if it was going to be hard going for the boys we should do the touristy thing so in we went, we had to pay extra for the house tour but there was a quiz sheet for the older children to do on the way round which made it a little more interesting. Once the tour of the house is over you arrive at the gift shop

where they sell an assortment of gifts and food for the peacocks! We bought some of the latter and went off in search of some to feed. Once the peacock food had all been used we headed for the lake, it’s not too far and once there the children found an adventure playground so the boy’s were more than happy and forgave Emma for dragging them round the house!!!

We spent quite a while there and had drinks and ice-cream (again not reasonably priced) we had wanted to go on the boat ride but again price and queues made this impossible, and the children were more than happy to play in the playground, after some time we decided to have another walk and actually without realising ended up back at the entrance, we had a quick look around and as we had a fairly long journey ahead we decided that it would be best to head home.

Once home I asked the children what they had most enjoyed about the day and was not surprised when they all agreed that the playground was the thing that stood out most!! A long way to go and a lot of money to pay for a couple of hours on an adventure playground!!!
