and Daisy's birthday cake

Snuffles was flicking through his calender, counting the weeks to Easter when he noticed that it was Daisy's birthday the following week.

"Daisy would love to have a birthday cake" thought Snuffles. "Maybe I could
bake a special cake for her myself, although on second thoughts I shall need some help, I¹d better go and see Mrs Owl,"

Mrs Owl was delighted to be able to help. "Now then Snuffles why don¹t we bake a fruit cake together and you can do the icing all by yourself", she said.

"Oh yes, that would be great" said Snuffles "I'll get some candles on my
way home."

Snuffles arrived back at Mrs Owls' house bright and early next morning clutching a small parcel containing the cake candles he had bought the previous evening.
Mrs Owl bustled around the kitchen choosing mixing bowls and ingredients to make the cake, while Snuffles watched excitedly ready to help with the
mixing.

After carefully measuring out the ingredients Mrs Owl gently instructed Snuffles as he stirred the cake mixture.

Mrs Owl finally placed the cake in the oven and they both sat down to a well deserved cup of Acorn tea.

"All we have to do when the cake is baked is decorate it," said Mrs Owl.
"Ooh that's the best bit" said Snuffles excitedly, "I can't wait".

A little later on Mrs Owl took the cake out of the oven and placed it in the
middle of the kitchen table. "There" she said proudly, "when it's cooled
down you can decorate."

Snuffles took great care icing and decorating the cake, and after a
considerable time he finally sat back proudly. "There" he said "won¹t
Daisy just love it?"

"Oh yes she will" said Mrs Owl, "now put it somewhere safe and I¹ll make us a nice cup of tea."

So they sat and chatted while they drank their tea, soon Snuffles got up to have another look at the cake.

Suddenly, Snuffles let out a muffled cry. Mrs Owl hurried to see what was
the matter. "Oh just look at the cake!" he wailed "It's ruined!"

The cake looked a very sorry sight indeed. Snuffles had placed it on a
table next to the window and the afternoon sun streaming through it had
melted the icing into a gooey mess.

"Oh my goodness" sighed Mrs Owl staring at the cake in disbelief, what ever
shall we do? Then she had a thought, "Just a minute -" she said, and
chuckling to herself she placed a few chocolate buttons on the cake.

"There now, who does that remind you of?" she laughed. "Why it looks like a hedgehog" said Snuffles, "in fact it looks rather like me!"

He was right. The melted icing and candles had made funny little squiggles
which looked just like prickles and Mrs Owl had used chocolate buttons for
eyes, a nose and mouth.

Daisy's birthday party arrived and was great fun. She had some lovely
presents but her favourite was the hedgehog birthday cake. So Snuffles and Mrs Owl, seeing her happy face, decided that perhaps this was one little
secret best kept to themselves.
