For adults looking to give books as gifts to children this Christmas, the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize shortlist is a good guide to the most popular books among the under 11s, selected from the very best children's books published in the last twelve months.

Says Julia Eccleshare, chair of the judging panel: "The Nestlé Smarties Book Prize recognises and celebrates

the very best writing and illustration for children.
