The SWEB Bristol
Harbour Festival 2002 (27-28th July) promises to be the most
exciting yet with a breathtaking array of free attractions
and entertainment both on the water and waterfront.
This year's event,
sponsored for the third year running by local energy supplier
SWEB, combines old favourites such as trapeze and acrobatic
acts, the popular French Market and fireworks display with
new features including a free evening music concert for all,
an international maritime exhibition and the unique street
entertainers competition.
The exciting programme
of events on the water includes gig racing, a boat challenge,
Newfoundland rescue dogs, water fountains from 'Pyronaut',
a helicopter rescue and marine assault displays. All this
against the backdrop of tall ships like 'Matthew' and over
250 colourfully decorated boats expected to travel to Bristol
for this unique city centre event!
The Right Reverend,
the Lord Bishop of Bristol, Barry Rogerson, will be blessing
the famous Bristol Clipper before it sets off for this year's
Times Clipper Round the World yacht race - a competition which
it won in 2000.
"The SWEB Bristol
Harbour Festival attracts huge numbers of people from Bristol
and across the region to share in the fun and enjoy seeing
the harbour and city centre full of activity. The event kicks
off a summer of first class entertainment in the city and
provides the opportunity to celebrate our inspirational maritime
heritage. Bristol City Council would like to say an enormous
thank you to SWEB, our sponsors and partners in this event"
said Councillor Helen Holland.
SWEB's Chris Baines
said "It has been thrilling to see the growing popularity
and appeal of the Harbour Festival over the past two years.
As a local company supplying energy to around a million homes
in the West Country, SWEB is delighted to be sponsoring the
event again this year, as part of our commitment to supporting
community events which benefit the region."
