Physical Education

Obviously, it's unlikely that your child will be set PE homework. However, you can help your child to become physically active, skilled and confident.

  • Take your child out walking. You can walk to school and in familiar places like the park, but you could also go further afield.
  • Play throwing and catching games like netball, and bat-and-ball games like short tennis, rounders and cricket.
  • Encourage your child to dance when you have music on.
  • Don't forget games that help to develop fine muscle control, such as pick-a-stick, fives and playing with a yo-yo.
  • Consider letting your child take gymnastics, dance or martial arts training (but be sure the instructors are fully qualified, that their equipment is well maintained and that they enforce proper safety rules).
  • Make sure your child learns to swim (either take her yourself or let her have lessons).
  • Encourage your child to join a group, such as Brownies or Cubs, where they play team games.
  • If you do a sport yourself, encourage your child to join in where appropriate.
  • If you follow a sport, encourage your child to take an interest - not only by watching it on television, but also by going to matches.
