Music

There are two ways you can help your child with music - by helping her become a confident singer or performer, and by helping her enjoy and appreciate listening to music.

Click here to see an interview with Australian music teacher Adrianne Fitzpatrick, with some useful advice to parents on how to develop their children's musical talents.

  • Let your child see that you enjoy music - have it playing in the background as you work, but also just sit down and listen to it.
  • Play different kinds of music at home - pop; folk; classical; hymns, carols and other religious music. Include music from different cultures and times.
  • Sing with your child - anything from nursery rhymes to traditional songs to the latest pop songs.
  • If you can play an instrument, play to your child. Let her see you practicing, too.
  • Play rhythm games - for instance, tap a rhythm and let your child tap it back to you, or continue the rhythm.
  • Help your child to make up songs and tunes, and work out words to go with them.
  • Talk about music - pick out the instruments in a piece of music; talk to your child about how a particular song makes him feel; discuss what kinds of music you like and share information about them.
  • Go to concerts with your child.
  • Give your child the opportunity to learn an instrument (this may be available at school), and encourage her to practice regularly.
