Being a parent is never easy, especially when your child is sick. You have to suddenly become doctor and nurse diagnosing the pain and administering the appropriate medicine or treatment. But how many parents are confident in their health knowledge to do this? A new survey reveals that 71% of parents are unsure how to treat their children when they fall ill.

So where should parents turn for help? Leading children's health specialists in the UK support a comprehensive new guide just launched, entitled, ‘Guide to Children's Pain & Fever for Health Professionals' which states that paracetamol should be a first line treatment for children's minor ailments management.

Paracetamol suspension for children was first launched over 40 years ago and due to its excellent safety profile, continues to bethe most widely used OTC remedy for children.

The survey results suggest that this new guideline will be welcome news for the majority of parents who are still confused about how to help their children when they are sick. The results highlight a lack of understanding among parents about what treatments to give children to manage the pain and fever associated with minor ailments. Often parents are baffled by the choice of remedies on the market and can hold misconceptions about which drugs are suitable to treat their child.

If you have any doubts about the best way to treat your child during illness, talk to Dr Warren Lenney, Consultant Paediatrician and Dawn Chandler, a child health expert, who will explain what the survey results mean and how the guide can help both parents and health professionals alike.
