Questions or thoughts that have come to mind when thinking about children and hypermobility, but firstly what is hypermobility?

Hypermobility is simple really have you heard about being double-jointed, namely the individual is able to bend in a manner of different ways, but some people think this is an asset, but we know different, We know that this will effect their internal organs and can be extremely painful.

You have to think through the eyes of a child and then your battle is halfway over?

So what we mean here what the able bodied child can do is of advantage to them, however when a child is suffering from this condition here are some pointers and areas for you to think about.

  • Does your child feel like a rag doll when you go to pick them up, but your child complains of being in pain and gets frustrated, because they can't do anything?
  • Your child gets annoyed because they can't stand up properly, because they complain of the feet going from under them, and they don't understand why their feet are so floppy.
  • Your child gets grumpy and starts to cry because they are in pain and shows no interest in people around them

What about life at school?

  • Does your child have writing problems, have you noticed that they keep telling you or you may have noticed that can't hold a pen?
  • Have the child's teacher commented that they think that they are being lazy or showing sign of being clumsy, are they accused of slouching, because one they cannot sit straight. No matter how many times they have tried it is too painful.
  • Children who have this condition will tell you in their own way that they are unable to take part in any form of physical education, because they will let it be known the sports teacher is a bit of bully and refuses to accept the fact that they have difficulties.

Facial expressions

These are a great indicator of how a child feels when they have to deal with this painful condition?

Think each of these child's faces is telling you and then think about the conditions and the effect upon your child?

Then think of the following statement: -

"I am different because my joints bend the wrong way and there are many people who suffer differently with this condition.

I have problems at school, because some of the teachers think I am playing up and being awkward, they think I am clumsy, I am not!

They don't understand, they make me do things I can't do, because they don't believe me.

I can only do school work for so long before I get very tired, and I have problems walking, sitting, I have problems getting through to special teachers!

Don't judge me, Make too many assumptions, and speak to me and not over my head".

  • Children have a great difficulty when it comes to doing up their laces. We know children are into the latest fashions, but they put these items on with some difficulty, but you will find that they will not be able to undo the zips, buttons, etc this is because they do not have the strength to be able to do the simple task.
  • A child will also complain when it is too hot and they will find it very difficult to even walk, this is because they do not have the strength to be able to perform this task and will start to moan and all they want to do is to sleep.
  • Has your child been targeted as being known as being clumsy and they may have had and eye co-ordination problems.
