Sexual health charity fpa today launched its latest publication ‘Talking Together…about sex and relationships’ (20th November). The book aims to give practical advice when talking to young people with learning difficulties about sex and sexual development. ‘Talking Together’ is aimed at 13 -19 year olds and covers a variety of subjects, from personal hygiene and privacy to methods of contraception and safe sex practices.

Designed to encourage informed, honest discussions in the classroom and at home, the book works on different levels - making it suitable for children who have just reached puberty to those who are embarking on sexual relationships. It is suitable for use regardless of the level of learning difficulty. By using two characters ‘Tom’ and ‘Debbie’ to illustrate everyday situations, students are given opportunities to discuss real life scenarios and experiences.

Chief executive of fpa Anne Weyman said: “Talking to young people about sex can be quite daunting – talking to individuals with learning difficulties can sometimes be more of a challenge. But it is just as important for these young people to be informed about their own sexual development so that they can benefit from close, loving relationships whilst keeping themselves safe. This guide will provide an excellent resource to professionals and also for parents and carers at home.”

This new resource is the second publication in the series. The first, ‘Talking Together……about growing up’ prepares children with learning difficulties for puberty.

‘Talking Together…..about sex and relationships’’ costs £15.99 plus P&P and is available from fpa direct, PO Box 1078, East Oxford DO,
Oxfordshire OX4 6JE. To order call 01865 719418.
