Thousands
of people all over the UK have problems when it comes to their hearing
but are often too afraid to seek help and just ignore the problem.
However, if you find people talk less clearly, or drop the ends
off their words, or if you need to have the volume on the TV or
radio louder than other people you may well be one of those who
would benefit from a hearing aid.
As with all areas, technology
is continuously improving, and hearing aids are no exception. Defeating
Deafness, the UK's medical charity dedicated to helping deaf and
hard of hearing people through medical research and education, is
supporting several groundbreaking research projects, including projects
aimed at improving hearing aids with new technology.
One exciting development
is the digital hearing aid becoming available on the NHS, with the
roll-out continuing until they are available everywhere in the UK.
It's important for those
that are hard of hearing to know what help is out there to ensure
that they are getting the best from these new advancements. To meet
this end, there are tools and guidelines available for patients
to ensure they get the best treatment and the most out of their
aid. By March 2005, the Government's Modernising Hearing Aid Services
initiative (which began in April 2000) will have pumped £120 million
into improving hearing aid services throughout the UK.
We have Brian Moore,
one of the UK's leading hearing aid researchers, and Vivienne Michael
from Defeating Deafness joining us to answer all your questions
related to coping with hearing loss.
Brian and Vivienne will
be with us on Friday 30 th July between 1:00 – 2:00pm for an online
chat.
