Ever wondered how you
can give yourself a cutting edge on the cognition-front in today's
super competitive, full-on modern world? In the US, home of the
24/7 world, one of the top selling herbal supplements for maintaining
a healthy active memory is ginkgo. In fact, over $99 million worth
of the herbal supplement was sold in the States in 2000 according
to the US journal HerbalGram.
In Germany, ginkgo is
ranked the number one prescribed herb, with over 10 million prescriptions
in 2003. German doctors consider it to be as effective as any treatment
for maintaining memory and mental function.
In the UK, ginkgo has
been something of a Cinderella in the world of complementary health
compared with alternatives such as omega 3. Its memory properties
are now beginning to be recognised with several popular herbal products
available through leading health and pharmacy retail chains plus
the launch earlier this year of Actimind, a natural health supplement
from the world's second largest vitamins and mineral supplement
producer Boehringer Ingelheim.
Eminent herbal expert
Simon Mills, who is based at the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter
and is Director of the International Centre of Phytotherapy, which
provides rigorous assessments of herbal medicines, says this of
ginkgo:
"The evidence for
the effects of ginkgo on mental performance is very persuasive.
There are good clinical trials that demonstrate that ginkgo increases
blood flow to the tissues of the body and especially to the brain
(which uses at least 20% of the total body supply)."
"Most research evidence
is that this is linked to an improvement in mental and coordination
functions. Ginkgo has been prescribed by doctors millions of times
in Europe, including as a preventative to large sections of the
population (for many years it was the single most prescribed drug
of all in Germany). As such it is suitable for widespread use as
a treatment where there are concerns about memory and mental functions."
Clinical Evidence
- Maintains Memory in Middle Age at Levels of Those in Their 20s
Four separate independent clinical trials conducted in Holland,
Sweden and the UK demonstrated that Actimind consistently improved
the Quality of Memory factor. In one 14 week trial3, after periods
of intensive memory testing, healthy middle-aged volunteers were
able to store and retrieve information more accurately and efficiently
throughout the day than at the start of the study. In fact, after
periods of intensive memory testing, these middle-aged volunteers
were able to achieve levels in the short term that a review of other
studies has shown are typical of 20-year olds. The product proved
so successful that even two weeks after stopping taking Actimind,
this effect on working memory was still present.
Panax Ginseng G115
and Ginkgo Biloba
Used in conjunction with Panax Ginseng G115, the ginkgo in Actimind
is standardised to ensure ideal dosage. The two extracts work to
help sustain a healthy circulation and optimum supply of oxygen
to the brain, maintaining an individual's working memory in the
short term in a fast moving modern world.
