"The book is rich and realistic: rich in the array of strategies and examples that work, and realistic in that it is based on vivid examples of how youngsters misbehave…her advice is practical, sound and interspersed with imaginative ideas that arrest attention…if I was head of a school…I would buy a copy for all the staff"…
Tim Brighouse on Getting the Buggers to Behave.

"This is what we need at the start of our careers: the reassuring guidance of someone who clearly cuts it in the classroom. If someone you know is about to begin a PGCE course or a first job in teaching, rush them a copy of this book. You'll be guaranteed Christmas cards for life."
Geoff Barton in the TES

Constructive, optimistic and entertaining, Getting Your Little Darlings to Behave provides a wealth of ideas and strategies in short, bite-sized chapters that parents can easily put into practice in the home. With a complete lack of jargon and theoretical waffle Sue Cowley draws on her extensive experience as a parent and teacher of all age groups, at all levels, and identifies useful, transferable skills that can apply to numerous situations. She says,

"…In this book I offer practical and realistic advice for parents about how to manage their children's behaviour…As a teacher I've dealt with the behaviour of literally thousands of different children; as a parent I understand just how stressful managing behaviour 24/7 can be. The strategies I outline in this book are simple to understand and put into practice, but will make an amazing difference to your children's behaviour."

Sue Cowley begins by explaining why children misbehave, top tips for managing their behaviour (such as be positive and set up structures and routines) and what doesn't work (such as the empty threat, getting drawn in and being confrontational). She asks parents to examine their own parenting style, their emotions and the kind of relationship they want with their children.

In Getting your Little Darlings to Behave, Sue Cowley describes the seven 'C's - Certain, Clear, Consistent, Calm, Caring, Careful and Creative - her positive watchwords to establishing good behaviour. The RESPECT formula includes teaching your child rights and responsibilities, positivity, enthusiasm and communication. Sue further examines how different signals both verbal and non-verbal can impact on a child's behaviour and how effectively positive praise and positive punishment can work.

Also incorporating case studies that detail different scenarios, from the attention seeking child to the destructive child, and explanations on how to approach children's behaviour at nursery, primary and secondary school, this is above all a down-to-earth, pragmatic guide that will leave parents feeling positive and empowered.

Sue Cowley is the author of Getting the Buggers to Behave 1 and 2, Getting the Buggers to Think, Getting the Buggers to Write, How to Survive Your First Year in Teaching, Guerilla Guide to Teaching and Sue Cowley's Teaching Clinic. She currently combines the roles of mother, educational author, trainer and consultant with supply teaching. Sue Cowley lives in Bristol.
