Making paper lanterns

Paper lanterns are something your mother and possibly even your grandmother might have made as a child. If our children and their friends are anything to go by they're just as popular today.

What you'll need:

Paper, thin card or wallpaper Scissors, Sellotape, a stapler or some glue Paints, crayons, pens etc. to decorate

Make a cut every half inch

1) First of all take your paper, card or wallpaper. It needs to be an oblong shape so maybe start with A4 size and then you can experiment once you've got the hang of it.
2) Cut off a strip about ½ inch wide from the shortest edge. This is going to be the handle.
3) Now is the time to decorate your paper if you want to, however, the lanterns look very pretty just plain white.
4) Fold the paper in half lengthways with the patterned side on the outside.
5) Now take your scissors and make vertical cuts about ½ inch apart to about ½ inch from the top. What you're aiming to end up with is a sort of fringe or comb effect.
6) Unfold the paper and bring the corners of the paper together widthways to form a cylinder.
7) Tape, glue or staple the edges together.
8) Attach the handle to the top … and there you have it.

These paper lanterns look very effective hung on trees or shrubs in the garden if you're having a party or a barbecue. At Christmas they look beautiful on the Christmas tree, particularly if you make them very small.

You can make a variety of sizes
