Weekly Activity

Our activities section suggests things for you to do with your children. Most of these will have educational value, which we'll point out. However, the main idea is just to have fun with them. We'll also suggest ways you can extend them.

Cooking With Your Child

Kitchens are dangerous places for young children, so the temptation is to keep them out from underfoot.

However, it's important for the sake of their health that children learn about food - and besides, cooking can be fun!

There are two ways you can involve your child with cooking - one is to get them to help in as many safe, small ways as you can devise. For instance, they can measure out ingredients and mix them; they can cut herbs, ham and bacon with safety scissors; and with closer supervision - and your tolerance and patience - they can try more complicated things, like cracking eggs.... and of course, they can take part in the cleaning up operation afterwards.

The other way to involve them is to make a special time for them to cook. It's worth taking the time to find recipes your child can manage with minimal supervision - though you may find many of them are far too sweet and fatty for good nutrition.

It goes without saying that you should NEVER allow your child to touch a pan containing hot fat or water, that you should NEVER allow your child to place a pan on the hob or in the stove, and that you should NEVER leave your child in the kitchen alone.

Why not try some of our recipes, they are easy to make, with full instructions provided.
